{"id":209,"date":"2008-11-06T15:58:06","date_gmt":"2008-11-06T22:58:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hamsterinawheel.ca\/?p=209"},"modified":"2008-11-06T16:32:56","modified_gmt":"2008-11-06T23:32:56","slug":"reducing-power-consumption","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.hamsterinawheel.ca\/?p=209","title":{"rendered":"Reducing power consumption"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I bought a Kill-a-Watt power monitor and measured the energy consumption of a few of our electronic devices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Computers<\/strong> logged-in, but not running any application:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>laptop: <strong>23 Watts<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Quad-core CPU, dual hard-drive desktop: <strong>109 Watts<\/strong> (73 for the computer itself, 36 for the LCD monitor)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I&#8217;m disappointed that a complete desktop computer system consumes more than 4 times as much as a laptop.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s especially disappointing that my 22-inch monitor consumes more that the laptop (which <em>has<\/em> an LCD monitor)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Plasma TV:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>0 Watts when off (Yay!)<\/li>\n<li>310-355 Watts when ON (Yikes!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lessons:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Unless you truly need an extremely powerful computer, buy a laptop<\/li>\n<li>Plasma TVs need electricity, lots and lots of it<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I bought a Kill-a-Watt power monitor and measured the energy consumption of a few of our electronic devices.
