14 Greater Toronto Area pedestrians dead, most were crossing legally.

The solution: send out the police to give tickets to pedestrians.

Problem solved.

There are, of course, careless pedestrians who cross without looking. However, it seems like most of the tickets were issued for “technical” infractions, such as crossing a street during a safe gap in traffic.

There are 2 dimensions: safety and legality. There are many intersections where drivers who are making a left turn do not notice pedestrians, so it’s safer to cross illegally during a gap than while it’s legal. Many traffic light favor cars, pedestrians have to wait too long, and when pedestrians can finally cross, they get run over by left turning cars.

And yesterday, we learned on the CBC that you can just go ahead and drive with a suspended license. When it’s time to harass pedestrians, “justice” is swift, but for drivers, well, it takes time, they’ll introduce a law later in the fall…
